What is Boudoir?

A boudoir (/ˈbuːdwɑːr/; French: [bu.dwaʁ]) is a woman's private sitting room or salon in a furnished accommodation usually between the dining room and the bedroom, but can also refer to a woman's private bedroom.

Just in case you were wondering what a boudoir actually is, now you know. When we mention boudoir we think of a woman's private area where she can basically let her hair down. Take off the worries of the day, remove the make up, be herself and possibly dance to some Beyonce in her underwear! (Oh, that's just me?) We often get caught up in this idea that when it comes to boudoir photos, we have to look like Victoria's Secret models. I always say, if that is what YOU want, then go for it! Let's find some wings and have fun! However, that can also put a limiting idea on what boudoir photos can be and that often limits women who feel they don't fit that category. I have news for you, it's a whole lot more to it!

When it comes to boudoir, it can be ANYTHING you want it to be. Anything that fits you. A good place to start is YOU! How do you let your hair down? Relax? What would you consider private or intimate details of you that you love? What are you comfortable in? A big shirt and panties? Luxurious robe? How about silk PJs or just a white sheet? Heck we could even have fun and get you in some super hero girl briefs... with wonder woman on them of course! The idea is to have fun and make it what YOU want it be. Which is so easy once you let go of what you think it's "supposed" to be.

Here are some questions I get all the time about shooting boudoir sessions:

1. I don't want these photos to get out, that would be embarrassing! How do you make sure that doesn't happen?

I make sure to not place your photos anywhere except with you if you have not given me permission to show them elsewhere. Also, I can create a password protected place for you to view them if you like. This isn't just for my boudoir clients. I do this for all my clients if they request it. I treat your privacy the same way I would like to treat my own. With great care.

2. I don't think I am pretty/skinny/photogenic enough to do boudoir photos.

There is literally no such thing in my opinion. I have taken photos of women of all shapes and sizes and never felt like any of them were difficult to shoot or work with. That is the beauty of hiring a professional. We know exactly how to work with each body type and work to make sure you are comfortable. I can also tell you from experience, a boudoir session does wonders for your confidence around body image and feeling free. I was scared at first because I had just had my son 3 months before the shoot. I hated the way my body looked. However, we sat down and talked about what I could wear and poses we could do to address and insecurities I had. It went wonderfully! I have even seen sessions where it's more of a "love your body" session. I love those because they often feature women who have finally decided and figured out how to love their bodies and stop thinking they have to be whatever society puts in front of us. Those are truly mind blowing! To have beautiful photos of us loving our stretch marks and HUGGING our curves instead of hating them. So inspiring and empowering!

3. I feel like it's sort of a vain or sleazy thing to do.

We as women often feel like celebrating ourselves is a vain or selfish thing to do. As if we should be ashamed to actually like ourselves. Why is that? Why do we need permission to do that? This isn't just with taking boudoir photos or even simple photos in general. This also happens with almost everything we do. We could want to celebrate getting a promotion at work but at the same time, we don't want to boast about it or make anyone feel bad. So we tone down our happiness. CELEBRATE YOURSELF! There is nothing wrong with it and you deserve it. We deserve every ounce of happiness we get and it's ok to enjoy it. Don't live your life in a shadow of shame. As far as being sleazy, again... a boudoir session can be whatever you want it to be. It can be bombshell sexy or girl next door just showing her legs or shoulders. It could even be photos of you getting ready by brushing your hair, applying make up, getting dressed... or the opposite. You coming in and getting everything off from the day. (Oh, the feeling when the bra finally comes off after a long day!) It really is up to you how far you want to go with it.

4. My husband wouldn't approve.

So ask him what WOULD he like? Or maybe try explaining to him what a shoot like this means to you. It's your body but he may need help in understanding why this is something you want to do in the first place and need to know how it will stay private. Otherwise, if he just isn't feeling it, we offer more than just boudoir sessions! Would he love to see you all dressed up in an elegant gown? Talk about your options or even invite him to come along if he is willing to be there for support or even be apart of the shoot!

There are so many reasons why people think of why they can't do boudoir and to that, I can think of so many reasons why they CAN. Of course, never do it because you feel pressured into it. This has to be about YOU and what YOU want first and foremost. If you would like to know more about taking boudoir photos with J Way, give us a call or contact us here. Thanks for reading!
